Warriors Magazine donates to Homeless Veterans!
Four years ago, I was sitting at my desk in Pittsburgh, PA watching a YouTube video at lunch featuring #TonyRobbins. In this video, Tony spoke of the power of giving to those less fortunate. He told a story of his own childhood, which was one of poverty and struggle.
Briefly described, one Thanksgiving a stranger knocked on his parent's door and offered them a basket of food so they could enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner.
While Tony's father actually denied the basket out of pride, Tony became inspired by the idea so much so that he started providing the same service every year.
I immediately became inspired when I heard this story. I knew that I needed to try it for myself. I realized that I had been given more than enough and it was time I start giving back. The only question that remained, was "whom should I give back to?"
I can honestly say, it didn't take me more than a few seconds to discover the answer. In my humble opinion, there is no greater group to give back to than our Military men and women! It was then, that I decided to raise $500, convert it to gift cards, and give them to homeless veterans.
I discovered the Veteran's Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania (VLP) and decided to approach them about the idea. However, I didn't want to just donate the gift cards; rather, I wanted to actually meet the men and women who served our country. I wanted to personally thank them and remember the experience.
These men and women literally have nothing - no homes, no jobs, no cars, no food, no drinks. They deserve to have a wonderful Thanksgiving and I felt it was my responsibility to give it to them.
The idea started 4 years ago, and we have raised over $2000 for 8 veteran families. Our goal for next year is to double that!
I encourage you all to give this a try - to think about a group of people you can donate to in order to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal they deserve!
