The growing threats in today’s world have given rise to a variety of EDC Self-defense tools. One of them is the “Self-Defender” by The Selfdefender Tool company and approved / used by Tactical Awareness Combative Training (TACT) and TACTOPSUSA.
This tool resembles a cross between a mini-Tonfa and a Kubaton.
Let's see if it is something worth carrying for your defense...
It weighs five (5) ounces, is seven (7) inches long, and it is made of durable metal with an ergonomically designed grip. The tool has a pointed end that could be used for destructive impact and an enlarged end-circle for blunt force strikes. One side has a small extended handle with a second circle on the end to maintain control. This additional axis creates a great deal of leverage generating additional force multiplication.
How easy a tool can be carried is the key in determining whether the device is truly Everyday Carry or Sometimes Carry. An EDC self-defense tool needs to be on you to be effective; therefore, if it is too cumbersome to carry or not part of your regular routine, it might as well be locked up in your safe. This particular EDC self-defense tool is somewhat cumbersome to include in your daily carry gear. It is seven (7) inches long, rigid, and has no way to connect to a keychain. It could be slipped through your belt or possibly placed in your pocket, purse, or backpack with the handle acting as a clip. However, it is unlikely most would display the tool in open sight as it would be sure to look out of place and garner unwanted attention. In all fairness, most self-defense tools are not easily or routinely carried without a conscience effort to do so.
EASE OF DEPLOYMENT
Not surprisingly, Carry Convenience is directly related to Ease of Deployment; and Ease of Deployment is perhaps the single most important determinant for effectiveness in a sudden street attack. If we assume the tool is carried in your pocket or within arm’s reach of a purse side-pocket for example, then Deployment is very easy, especially with the extended handle. The tool is not complicated and because of the many angles of attack that it affords, it does not matter how the tool is presented. The Self-Defender can be engaged immediately with a high degree of accuracy.
There are many variables that affect how well an EDC self-defense tool works in combat and the Self-Defender shines in this category:
The legality of any self-defense tool is best determined by contacting your local authorities and state legislature. While the Self-Defender may not be identified specifically, it may best be approximated by the laws surrounded a Kubaton. Having said that, there is no permit required to carry this tool, but it is unlikely the TSA would approve of it as part of your carry-on luggage for a flight.
(See TSA permitted items, https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/all ).
The tool is advertised as “Non-Lethal,” however, I believe this speaks to its intended design, not its capability. Lethality is based on use, tactics, and targeting. A machete has a greater “lethal” design than a pillow; but a machete can be used to cut vegetables and a pillow can be used to suffocate someone. It is all about use.
The manufacturer of the Self-Defender has pledged that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to charitable causes for victims of assault and abuse. Warriors Magazine commends them for their commitment to being part of the solution.
