Issue 4: Letter to the Editor
It is no longer a school yard antic, and while some consider it a rite of passage, it is not. As I witness the plague of juvenile suicides fueled by bullying I get physically sick and then I get furious. So let’s take a pragmatic approach to this problem and break it down into the simplest of terms.
What is bullying? People in a position of strength exploiting weaker individuals for gain.
When did it start? Since the dawn of human-kind.
Who bullies? People, companies, governments, and even animals.
What is the reason for bullying? People bully because they can. Unfortunately, it is a natural order for the strong to prey on the weak.
Why has it become deadly? In a word, the Internet. Social media has taken bullying from a local event to worldwide breaking news with a single mouse-click. The thought of a would-be scandal going from a high school rumor to the subject of an entire Facebook page is often overwhelming for our youth.
What can be done to stem the tide?
The truth is that there is no silver bullet and I cannot guarantee that these suggestions will stop this crisis. What I can guarantee is that more children will fall victim to this senseless tragedy if we do not act. It is time to be bold because one child lost to bullying is one too many.
