Short Padded Knife Trainer
One of the most important aspects of training for a real-life self-defense situation is ensuring that the training is as realistic as possible. However, making training sessions realistic can be difficult, because training at full intensity can cause injury to oneself or training partner, especially when using training weapons. Injuring training partners is a good way to quickly run out of people to train with.
I first used a Bunal padded training knife in January 2018 at a Fred Mastro seminar. I was impressed that the padded knife could be used with greater levels of intensity. The padded knife opens up a whole new realm of training options which allows the user to focus on responses and technique while limiting the likelihood of injury. The ability to train with realistic intensity can be very effective in revealing weak areas of a defense system. I find it fitting that Bunal’s slogan is "Instruments for Finding Truth." Training at a higher intensity allows one to pressure test the techniques in a way that could not be quantified in any other way. Pressure testing a technique is something that should be done to ensure effectiveness of any concept you are potentially depending on to save your life.
I currently own a few of the Bunal Padded training knives and plan to order more of their equipment. They offer a whole gamut of training gear from helmets to training knives and swords of all shapes and sizes. Another benefit of the Bunal padded trainer is that virtually anyone can use it regardless of strength or skill. TIP: watching YouTube videos of real knife attacks is a great way to understand the dynamics of a real attack and ensure that one’s training will be useful if ever needed. The majority of attacks are right handed, use gross motor motions and are repetitive, typically targeting the lower torso and upper chest. After viewing videos of real attacks reenact them and test your own defensive techniques.
The Bunal Trainer is not an all-encompassing knife trainer in that it can’t be used to practice deployment if you carry a folder for your actual carry knife. It is slightly lighter weight and shaped differently than a carry knife. However, the added value of being able to train at full intensity with a Bunal makes it worth including in your training toolkit. Just like any tool, it is designed specifically for the job. The padded training knife is designed to increase safety while training at high intensity.
I have used my Bunal padded training knives in my own training and for teaching others for about a year now. The material is strong and there is little to no wear, which is remarkable considering the amount of use these trainers have seen. Everything considered, I would recommend the Bunal padded training knife to anyone as an excellent piece of training equipment.
